Nearly 750 teams came out over the blustery Labor Day weekend in Buffalo, Wyo., to get a jump-start on the northern region’s point standings and play for a chance at $35,000 in cash and prizes.

The two-day event in Buffalo kicked off the 2011 National All Amateurs Tour and featured the NAA’s signature ropings — a #10 and #8 roping guaranteed to pay $5,000 for first and eight trophy saddles, respectively.

The wind didn’t faze Mike Schmitz and Matt Schieck, who won the #9 Roping on Sunday, nor Todd Rothleutner and Mike Peterson, who claimed bragging rights in the #10 Roping by catching three steers in 22.31 seconds. That roping paid eight places, and Rothleutner was the high-point man of the day, pocketing $3,925 for his efforts.

On Labor Day, the cool weather didn’t deter #4 and under ropers, either, with Shane Joseph and Johnson County’s own Kenny Knudson winning the No Wolves Allowed Roping in 27.84 seconds on three head to take home $2,000 and trophy saddles. Other saddle winners were Chris Knudson and Tod Vineyard; Roy Jarrard and Paulette Moss; and Don Camino and Ben Hilderman. Plus, ropers down to eighth place earned cash, as well as fully tooled breast collars or leather bronc halters.

Congratulations to all the winners in Wyoming, and remember, the NAA Tour heads to Arizona next month, so watch championshipteamroping.com for the fall schedule!

For the Finals, we’ve stepped up the cash and awards. Okay, “stepped up” might be an understatement – we’ve doubled the cash and prizes from the regular Tour stops! In addition to the guaranteed $10,000 for first in the average of the #10 Roping, the champions will also be awarded trophy saddles.

And the #8 Roping is guaranteed to award trophy saddles through 10th place in the average. It’s been great to see the excitement in the #8 Roping – at several of these ropings, you only had to catch 3 steers to win a check. This summer we’ve awarded back more than $40,000 in cash and prizes in the #8 Roping.

In Billings, we’ll also feature two “Match of Champions” ropings – a #10 and a #8. These ropings are for the top ropers in each division based on points collected throughout the season. You earned points for placing in the average and also points for each entry. Both of these “Match” ropings are Pick 1 Draw 1 or Draw 2 for $100 per man; enter 2 times for a total of 4 runs. Each roping will have 2/3 cash payback with a whopping $5,000 guaranteed for 1st in the average.

The following ropers are eligible to enter the #10 “Match of Champions:”

Our inaugural trip into Colorado was a huge success, drawing teams from even the Western Slope and Wyoming to try things out inside the beautiful arena at The Ranch. The appeal of the National All Amateurs format is spreading!

On Saturday, Harris won the #10 Roping with Jesus Terrazas in a time of 22.74 seconds on three steers to earn $5,260, and then teamed with Hardy White to win Colt Bruegeman’s Big Daddy 500 for another $6,700. Also on Saturday, Cash Merritt and Gerald Watson won the #9 Roping for $1,700.

Century Roping winners Socorro Gutierrez and Joe Stricklin, with a time of 29.99 seconds on three head, earned $1,180 and Gist trophy buckles on Sunday, so congratulations to them!

And in the #8 “No Wolves Allowed” Roping, Wendy Wiseman and Jack Lambert were the big winners with a 29.37 on three to split $2,000 and won two of the eight saddles awarded. Together, the #8 and #10 Ropings paid out more than $36,730 in cash and prizes!

Can it get any better than winning $8,640 for entry fees of just $50 a man? That’s what Joe Miller and Clay Odaniel did on July 3 by topping more than 500 teams in the #10 Roping. Way to go, guys! That roping paid 15 places in the average, and since just 13 of the top 40 caught their last one, we paid on two head, too.

More than 1,400 teams celebrated America’s birthday over the two-day Fourth of July weekend by roping in the backdrop of Mount Rushmore – a monument to our country’s greatest leaders.

Rapid City also kicked off our three-week run in as many states, and I’m happy to report that ropers are embracing our events that feature low fees, big payouts and great Mexican cattle, as opposed to high entry fees or getting beat by the cattle or by dominant ropers.

Besting 223 teams in the #9 Roping in Rapid were Kirk Kooiker and Mark Woods with a great time of 25.67 seconds on three, so congratulations to them. And on Sunday, the Century Roping championship – along with Gist trophy buckles – went to Tom Christinick and Louis Brown, with a 28.28 on three.

We wrapped up the fireworks with a phenomenal #8 Roping, in which we paid 20 places in the average and awarded 10 trophy saddles through fifth place. Kudos to Kevin Kosel and Dick Wilkerson, who won the roping with a 23.68 on three. With $14,000 added to the payoff, the #8 ropers played for more than $35,000 in total cash and prizes.

We’re rolling right along, so don’t miss our next two events on July 10-11 in Billings, Mont., and on July 17-18 in Loveland, Colo. Hope to see you there!
